Free Poker Coaching To Why Patience Is The Key Poker Skill

28 September 2011
Simple Guide Free Poker Coaching To Why Patience = 50% Of Your Success and an Easy Way To Enhance Yours

In this NoPayPOKER.com free online poker coaching lesson we are revisiting a core poker skill originally covered in the Building a Bankroll course a while ago. It is a skill that is without a doubt the most important single skill in poker namely Patience.

With the rise of online poker many people who would have otherwise never played poker have got involved on the basis of the get rich quick teases made in the mass media.

Most of these players have only basic poker skills and after a short while conclude that poker is just a game of luck. That is a pity as what most of them don't know is that if they took a bit of time to learn some basic skills and added in a dose of common sense then they could win, at the least, lower stakes online poker cash games consistently.

This is in fact good news for the skilled online poker player as it means you can win a lot of money from the 90% majority of bad ones! After all if poker is just luck how is it that we have consistent poker winners and professional players some of whom are actually multi millionaires as a result of their poker winnings?

Precisely, if it were game of luck then that would be impossible, (we don't get big names in the coin flipping game business do we now!) the conclusion clearly then is that poker is game that requires skills.

There are dozens of poker skills that can be isolated but the one that stands heads and shoulders above all the other is Patience. If you can't be patient when you play poker then it doesn't matter that you are a psychology and math PHD who can calculate all the odds in an instant and read people like a book because if you can't wait for the right cards at the right time, you're doomed.

So why don't we get into some poker education by illustration of the use and application of patience.

Application of patience in poker tournament play.
Here you need to defend yourself against the players who fling their chips around with no care during the opening rounds of every game as if it were Bingo. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking they know what they're doing. They do not!

Instead you must hold out for some premium cards. Sure you'll have to fold some and lose a few chips as you wait but if you wait for the right moment then you'll get a whole pile of chips later on from the chip throwers at the same time you knock them out (or rather, they knock themselves out!).

Simply hold on and wait for some good cards from the dealer. Just relax until then. I know that it's hard to sit by and you feel you should be involved but trust me, winning money is lots more fun that losing and at the end of the day poker is all about money rather than playing a game and in any case winning money is pretty good fun!

Patience Developing Exercise (PDE)
This is an easy though boring and time consuming exercise but one that will help a lot.

Go and join a free online poker freeroll. One with lots of players is best.

1) For the entirety of the game you're only allowed to participate in a hand if you were dealt pocket aces or pocket kings.

2) No other pockets can be played.

3) And, you cannot initiate a bet, or put forth a raise.

4) If you do have AA or KK in the pocket, you can call a bet and partake in the hand.

5) Again, though, you cannot raise or initiate any betting.

6) Also, if you're the Big Blind, and you do not hold aces or kings, you must fold; even when there may not have been a raise made against your big blind.

This exercise has helped many players significantly improve their skill set, give it a go!

When you play in a PDE game you're only going to participate in about 1% of the hands. You'll get AA and KK once in every 212 pockets. Yes that is boring I know! .

Indeed this article is a bit boring too but if you can take the point of it that is represents 50%+ of the skill you need to win poker then I do not think the consequences will be boring at all!

So if you are not already a patient player get over to a free poker online freeroll and play the PDE game.

Frank Poker and Eggs

9 June 2009

A poker strategy decision we all have to make at times!

Once upon a time there was a guy name Frank. He liked to eat eggs. He liked them scrambled, over easy, and on a sandwich. Frank also enjoyed playing online poker. He plays poker and eats eggs at the same time. Sometimes he spills eggs on his keyboard, but he doesn't mind. One time he was cooking eggs and playing poker at the same time. The eggs were done but he had ace on his table. Would he let his eggs burn and play his ace, or go get the eggs and be forced to fold his ace?!

Frank was faced with a very difficult decision! The two things in his life that he loves with a passion were requiring him to make a very hard decision. Frank thought for a few seconds. His ace looked so beautiful, but he could smell his eggs. Oh how he loved the smell of those eggs. He couldn't let them burn! He got up, ran to the stove, quickly turned it off, and took his eggs off the burner. He quickly seasoned them to his likings before running back to his computer. He was too late. His ace had folded itself, as he timed out.

Upon arriving back at his computer he saw his beautiful ace be folded. His stomach sank. Did he make the right decision? Should he have chosen eggs over the best hand in poker - Pocket Rockets??!

He didn't think so at the time. His eyes were glued to the screen as the flop came. It was the K of spades, Q of spades, and 4 of hearts. Their were 4 players still in the hand. A 'check' came from every player. The turn was the 8 of spades. Frank thought for a moment maybe, just maybe, he had made a good decision to fold his ace.

Frank was staring at his screen. The player in position number 1 checked. Position number 2, however, placed a bet of nearly half the pot. Two calls, followed by a fold led to the river card. The river card turned out to be the K of hearts. A very large bet from position 2 was raised by the player in position 3. The cards were turned over: One player had three of a kind Kings. The other, however, had rivered a full house! Frank was glad beyond belief about his decision to fold. He screamed at the top of his lungs and began pigging out on his eggs. They were delicious!

3 Core Poker Skills

9 June 2009

In order to be good at poker you need to have many different skills. You must bring all of these specific skills together in order to be successful on the casino or online poker tables.

The first thing that is necessary is composure

You must be able to hide your hands and deceive the other players on the table. If you are not composed you will likely give away your hand to your opponents which would lead to you losing.

The second thing that is needed in order to be a successful poker player is intelligence - or rather "poker intelligence

You may be intelligent in other areas of life but if you lack poker inteligence then high stakes poker is probably not the right thing for you, stick to the free poker games, maybe you'll develop it over time

You need to know when to bluff, when to bet, when to fold, and you will also need to try to get a read on your opponents hand. Intelligence is a thing that is needed for everything that any one would ever do in their lives, but in my opinion it is especially important in poker.

You can win a large sum of money, or lose a large sum of money very quickly. I am assuming you want to win (what normal person doesn't?), therefore you must be smart about your game.

The third and most important thing in order to be a good poker player is the ability to have fun

You are obviously not going to win every single hand that you play. You may lose a big hand, but you just have to be calm and collected. If you are going to freak out and get mad every hand you lose, then you are not going to be a good poker player.

If you have these three things, then you are probably going to be rather successful on the tables. You will also be able to have a fun game with friends!
